Historically, hurricanes were thought to be a result of nature's fury and thus a punishment for the sins humans committed. Now the knowledge about hurricanes is a lot more with the advances in science but it is still a topic of unknown proportions.
The recent hurricane in the gulf region of the united states went by the name of "katrina" and was one of the worst natural disasters in the history of the USA.
Being a sailor, i myself have faced the force of a hurricane when on a passage of Singapore to Japan in the South China Sea. Name was "tokage". Probably i will never forget it for it was my first tropical storm at sea. It was so bad that we had to take refuge behind taiwan on its north west side. When it hit japan, it caused a lot of devastation to the small group of islands.
Today i wanted to discuss about how the hurricanes are named. The names are decided for the whole year and it follows a sequence of alternate male and female names in alphabetical order from 'A' to 'W'. Eg. this one was katrina and so the next one is with 'L' and it would be a male name. So the next hurricane in the north atlantic will be known as "lee". So it is possible to determine by the name of the hurricane the serial number of the hurricane that year. The alphabets 'Q' and 'U' are excluded from the naming.
The official 2005 hurricane names are as follows:
Arlene
Bret
Cindy
Dennis
Emily
Franklin
Gert
Harvey
Irene
Jose
Katrina
Lee
Maria
Nate
Ophelia
Philippe
Rita
Stan
Tammy
Vince
Wilma
That was just a little insight into hurricanes though this is a very exhaustive subject.
So, until next time...
