Cliffhanger!

Hi evryone,

This is about a wall climbing experience that i and my batchmates had the opportunity to go thru.
It was a 3 hr workshop sort of thing in the Institute of Mountaineering, Tanjong Pagar in Singapore. It was sponsored by our company.
Lets get a bit technical first. Climbing is done in groups of 2. One is the climber ofcourse. The other one is a belayer who like controls the rope and prevents the climber from falling due to a slip or some other mistake.
This wall was about 10 metres in height and it looked like a considerable task. I was the belayer first and my friend swaroop was the climber. He is quite a short build and quite light. He started to climb and was up to the summit in maybe a minute or so. That did build my confidence up a bit!
Then came my turn. Puttin on the gear is very important. U have to wear a safety harness after which u look like a US marine (maybe). Then there is the figure of 8 tht u have to make on ur rope and attach it to ur harness. Knots are not a problem for me coz i am a seaman. So tht was the easier part for me. All ready and tight, i started my climb. I started by clutching one of the supports on the wall and puttin my foot onto another. I came rite down. It took another 3 to 4 attempts to get a good grip and actually get on the wall. But then was the easy part actually. It took me about a minute and a half to reach the top. The trick is to stop and think about which supports to hold and then gradually pull yourself up.
Evryone had their chance at it. After tht was the time for the real competition. A new wall was chosen, slightly tougher than the previous one. And this climb was timed. I got a time of 50.17 secs. The best was about 20secs. So i dint clear the round. There were 2 more rounds and finally one guy came out to be the winner.
This experience was an enthralling one and i would love to do it again.
Until next time.
